Watch Friday’s Tug of War here on Youtube

On Friday 31st May, the Friends of John Beddoes School handed a petition of 1500 signatures to County Councillor Myfanwy Alexander, Portfolio Holder for Education at Powys County Council. The petition urged the County Council to consider the 3rd Option.

The Friends staged a very good-humoured “tug of war” tableau, demonstrating the particular problems associated with closing a school so close to the English border. Here’s the link:

County Councillor Alexander was given the petition by two children, one a John Beddoes pupil and the other Presteigne Primary School pupil. On receipt of the petition, (which has seen names collected from around the County, UK and even abroad) one of the youngsters requested that John Beddoes was allowed to stand on its own two feet. County Councillor Alexander replied, “Well I’m afraid if you look at the condition of John Beddoes its young people like you who’ve been suffering and that’s why we don’t feel that there’s any other way forward.”

This surprising statement was made while Powys County Council’s public consultation still had over two days to run.

The Friends sincerely hope that the County Councillors will not ignore the voice of the electorate and local democracy in action and support the 3rd Option.
